Feature a Teacher

Shakira Brown, Science, Promise Academy Charter School

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire.

What is your favorite lesson?

I enjoy teaching my students about the physics of the Egyptian pyramids.

Tell us about your own favorite teacher.

My favorite teacher was Ms. Jordon, who taught sophomore Biology in high school. Ms Jordan was the first teacher who gave me enough freedom and support to really develop an interest in science. I performed my first dissection with her, which is when I initially fell in love with Biology.

What was your favorite school trip?

My favorite school trip was when I took 14 of my honors students to the Galapagos Islands. This year was my second year to the Islands and I am still amazed.

Describe your perfect day.

A perfect day for me would be if all my students handed in all of their homework and I was able to grade all of their papers in one day.

What is the school supply you can’t live without?

The school supply that I can’t live without are Post-it notes. They are the closest I can get to a secretary right now!

What is the best quotation you’ve ever heard from a student?

“School is like a tool kit for life. It prepares you for all the things that you will encounter down the road.”

Shakira Brown has been chosen by the National Science Foundation to study in Antarctica. She will blog and teach via video conference during her eight-week expedition.
