Special Education

The Department of Education is making improvements in the way we deliver services to students with disabilities. The goals of this work are:

  • to close the achievement gap between students with disabilities and their peers without disabilities;
  • to provide increased access to and participation in the general education curriculum; and
  • to empower all schools to have greater curricular, instructional, and scheduling flexibility to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

During the 2010-2011 school year, approximately 250 schools are participating in the first phase of this effort, as described in the Chancellor's Memo in January 2011.

The Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners is providing professional development and creating instructional supports and tools, many of which are hosted on the Individualized Education Program and Curriculum pages of the DOE's intranet site. There are additional resources on this page of the DOE's public site.
