PTS Name: Assessing Student Learning

Element: Using the results of assessments to guide instruction

Indicators

As teachers develop, they may ask, “How do I…” or “Why do I…”:
  • Use assessment to guide my planning?
  • Use informal assessments of student learning to adjust instruction while teaching?
  • Use assessment data to plan more effective ways of teaching subject matter concepts and processes?
  • Use assessment information to determine when and how to revisit content that has been taught?
  • Use assessment data to meet students’ individual needs?
  • Use assessment results to plan instruction to support students’ individual educational plans (IEP)?

Descriptions

Examples may include, but are not limited to:
  • After reviewing assessment data, create needs-based groups to foster collaboration and growth
  • Using informal assessment to gauge student engagement and/or degree of student understanding during a lesson, and determining immediate adjustments and modifications
  • Using analysis of student work to determine the teaching points for upcoming lessons
  • Looking at student data with cluster teachers, Collaborative Team Teachers (CTTs), or instructors of English Language Learners (ELLs) to jointly determine strategies for meeting students
    developmental needs

Problems of Practice

Challenges with this element frequently include:
  • Delivering the lesson as planned despite the information revealed in student assessments
  • Failing to use assessment data when grouping students or making other instructional decisions
  • Moving on to a new learning objective even though a number of students did not meet the previous objective and failing to provide additional support for these students on that objective
