PTS: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

Element: Using materials, resources, and technologies to make subject matter accessible to students

Indicators

As teachers develop, they may ask, “How do I…” or “Why do I…”:
  • Use subject matter resources, materials, and technologies to organize the curriculum?
  • Select and use instructional materials and resources that promote students’ understanding of
    subject matter?
  • Select and use learning materials and resources that reflect the diversity in my classroom?
  • Use technologies to convey key concepts in the subject matter area?
  • Help all students gain access to useful materials, resources, and technologies to support their learning of subject matter?

Descriptions

Examples may include, but are not limited to:
  • Using a multi media approach to support and extend student learning (e.g. engaging in research projects using a variety of media, relating themes and concepts to current songs, movies and television shows; supplementing economic theories with news articles and TV news shows)
  • Integrating relevant technology such as computers/laptops, Smart board, PowerPoint, and gel boards to enhance student involvement
  • Choosing reading selections that are equally appealing to girls and boys
  • Selecting internet sites that are accessible to English language learners at a variety of
    proficiency levels

Problems of Practice

Challenges with this element frequently include:
  • Using resources and materials that are not appropriate for students’ grade or readiness levels, or for the content being taught
  • Selecting resources on the basis of convenience (i.e. that they are available, easy to attain, or appeal to the teacher)
  • Feeling reluctant towards incorporating technology to support student learning
  • Relying on a limited set of instructional tools (e.g. Books and Smart boards)
