Information about special education evaluation process. A student must be referred to the committee on special education to receive an individual initial evaluation before a student can receive special education and related services for the first time.

Information gathered during the assessment process is used to determine the student's educational needs and to guide decision making about his or her eligibility for special education services.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Based on individual needs, students require different levels of assistance. In determining the type and intensity of the special education services that are needed by a given student, the IEP Team must consider what services (e.g. special education teacher services, related service, etc.) are required to

(a) address the student's needs that result from the student's disability to enable the student to be involved and progress in the general education curriculum and

(b) to meet the other education needs that result from the student's disability.
Student with a Disability Student with a disability means a student who:
- has not attained the age of 21 prior to September 1st
- is entitled to attend public schools pursuant to section 3202 of the Education Law
- because of mental, physical or emotional reasons, has been identified as having a disability
- requires special services and programs approved by the department
