Information on small public schools established across New York City.
The schools developed as part of the New Schools Initiative share three common design characteristics.
1. Academic rigor (college preparatory classes, high standards)
2. Personalization (small size so staff know all students; most schools have fewer than 500 students)
3. Partnerships (schools work with community organizations, cultural institutions, and businesses to provide opportunities for students)
"As of September 2005, 149 new secondary schools, 5 elementary schools, and 24 charter schools have opened as part of the New Schools initiative."
