Information about the new Citywide Council on Special Education. There is a new Citywide Council on Special Education to advise and comment on special education services in New York City public schools. Members of the Council are representatives of the parents of students receiving citywide special education services and of the community. They hold open meetings with parents, and will issue an annual report on the effectiveness of special education services. Become a Council candidate People nominate themselves by completing an application (that includes instructions).
Applications are available at http://schools.nyc.gov/councils and from the Parent Coordinator in every school during the nomination period in each Council election year. Call the Councils Hotline at (800) 850-6443 for more information. This year the application deadline is March 9th.
Meeting Calendar Citywide Council on Special Education (CCSE) meetings currently take place at 6pm on the second Wednesday of each month. Meeting locations vary monthly. Contact the CCSE office at (718) 752-7475 for current meeting information. The new Council may vote to change meeting times after they take office on July 1st.
Selection of parent members Nine members are selected by the President, Secretary and Treasurer of every Parent Association and Parent-Teacher Association from every citywide special education school. There is a citywide forum at which candidates make presentations, after which attendees may submit their written comments before the selection of Council members takes place. Elections for new members will be held beginning April 30th through May 8th. Two additional members will be appointed by the Public Advocate.
Term of Appointment Members selected or appointed in 2007 will serve a two year term beginning July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2009.

Selections and appointments will take place every two years after that.
