Description Detailed Description
Requirements to enroll in Public School. Anyone age 5 to 21 on December 31 who has not received a high school diploma can attend a public school for free. A child must be age 4 to be eligible to attend pre-kindergarten. In most cases, a child's elementary or middle school location is determined by place of residence. "High School placements are made through a citywide high school admissions process or at a High School Registration Center. The locations and hours of operation for the High School Registration Centers will be available on August 11th."

High School Registration To register a child for high school, you must provide appropriate documentation: immunization records, transcript, current report card and proof of address (gas or electric bill only). For incoming 9th graders, a school record must be provided which includes proof of completion of the 8th grade, test scores and course work taken (a diploma from the intermediate school is not sufficient). If your child is coming from another New York City High School, you must also bring discharge papers completed by the school from which he/she is being discharged.
Immigration Status By law, students who are undocumented aliens may not be denied admission to school and they are not required to present documentation of immigration status or U.S. residency.
Required Schooling A minor who turns 6 on or before December 31 is required to attend full time instruction from that September and remain in attendance until the last day of the session in the school year in which the minor turns 17.
