The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (OIA) serves as the Department of Education’s liaison to elected officials at all levels of government. This includes managing and maintaining relationships between the DOE and the New York City Council, New York City Borough Presidents, Public Advocate, and City Comptroller. The OIA also represents the DOE in the New York State Assembly, New York State Senate, Governor’s Office, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and the White House. Additionally, the OIA coordinates education policy with the Mayor’s Office and other City agencies.

The OIA’s responsibilities include tracking and advising on local, state, and federal legislation and lobbying elected officials at all levels of government on behalf of the DOE. The OIA also prepares and coordinates testimony presented by the DOE at hearings and assists elected officials with constituent service casework related to education. The OIA has offices in New York City, Albany, and Washington, D.C.

The New York City DOE is regulated by the New York State Education Department and the U.S. Department of Education. The State monitors each school district’s progress and compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind law..
