ROMARE BEARDEN, 1914-1988
MOSAIC, GLASS, 7'-10" X 28'-10"
When Romare Bearden received the commission for two school murals, he was well known as an artist, having had a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1971. The original design for Bearden’s mosaic mural for I.S. 84 (renamed P.S. 811) depicted, according to the materials submitted to the Art Commission, the “liberation struggle of the Puerto Rican and Afro-American and Latino leaders.” The final mural is a more schematic composition showing a map projection of Puerto Rico and Africa at either end with profile views of Puerto Rican and African American students over a cityscape in the center. The message promoting racial harmony between the two groups is clear.
