Changes to our Schools
New schools are located throughout the City to meet specific needs. The information below represents the DOE’s current understanding of new school needs. The information provided here will be updated and changed, so please check back for further information. Updated August 25, 2009
In some of these cases, a specific location or facility has been identified for a new school to meet a need. The identified locations include under-utilized facilities, buildings where a school is moving to another location, or new construction. The DOE has made a major commitment to build new buildings in areas where there is need. Between 2002 and 2006, the DOE added 53,781 new seats. The current five year Capital Plan allocates $4.5 billion to build 105 new buildings that will increase the public school system’s capacity by 63,000 seats.
In other cases, the DOE has identified a specific need for a new school but has not identified a facility to locate a new school. In these cases, the DOE will continue to assess the use of current facilities and work with local communities to determine appropriate placement of new schools.
