On November 7, 2016, at the Michael J. Petrides Educational Complex, Community Education Council (CEC) 31 voted to create a the zone for new school P.S. 68 and changed the zone lines of nearby elementary schools in an effort to alleviate overcrowding.

On September 21, 2016 the DOE presented a rezoning plan to Community Education Council (CEC) 31 proposing to create a zone for new school P.S. 68, in an effort to alleviate overcrowding at neighboring elementary schools, reduce the need for surrounding elementary schools to cap and overflow students, and facilitate the eventual removal of Transportable Classroom Units (TCUs) at P.S. 19.
