Sharing multiple strategies, thought processes and reasoning, and active listening

Classroom discourse supports and promotes learning in math. It provides the opportunity for students to share and revise their thinking, as well as giving the teacher insight into the thought processes of the students. There are many opportunities for classroom discourse during a math lesson. It can occur during the mini-lesson (turn and talk) as students work in their flexible groups, and during the whole class share.  When questioning students, teacher provides adequate wait time (10 – 20 seconds), to allow students a chance to think.
