Changing the number range or providing tools to support are ways to differentiate Mental Math & Reflexes.

Example from Grade 3:

  • Is 63 closer to 60 or 70?
  • Is 88 closer to 80 or 90?
  • Is 45 closer to 40 or 50

Differentiation Strategies:

  • Provide a number line as a visual tool to help students solve the problem.
  • Create an open-ended problem allowing students to use numbers at their level: "I'm thinking of a number between 60 and 70. It is closer to 60. What numbers can it be?"
