Robin Hood Libraries

The Robin Hood Library Initiative is a partnership between the Robin Hood Foundation and the New York City Department of Education.  The goal of this collaboration is to improve literacy by revitalizing school libraries.

The Robin Hood allocation provides the following funding for each school:

One library teacher position at the school’s average teacher salary

               One paraprofessional position at $34,699

               After-school/weekend operations at $11,879

Library books at $6.15 per audited October 2016 pupil count

Libraries must also be available for community use through after-school and weekend openings.  All libraries are reviewed for program compliance and any school found to be out of compliance will not receive funding.  Programmatic questions can be directed to Lynne Kresta Smith in the Office of Library Services at

Paraprofessional positions must be scheduled at actual salary.  Should the allocated amount exceed the paraprofessional’s cost, excess funds may be used to pay for after-school and weekend operations.

Collective bargaining is included in the school average teacher salary amount allocated for each position.  The attached table lists each school’s allocation.  Funds are to be scheduled in the allocation category, TL Robin Hood Libraries.

A school that has scheduled the TL Robin Hood Libraries funds does so by agreeing to and will meet all of the Expectations of a Robin Hood Funded Library Program.  Schools may not schedule funds for categories other than library staffing, library books, and MyLibraryNYC without written approval from the Office of Library Services.
