Annual Arts in Schools Report | Raw Data | ArtsCount: A Principals Guide

“With ArtsCount we are taking arts education to a new level and holding schools accountable for providing all students with the arts instruction they need and deserve.” Chancellor Joel I. Klein

ANNUAL ARTS IN SCHOOLS REPORT
Under the leadership of Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein, New York City has made the arts a priority for all its public schools. The arts enrich our children’s lives and learning, and all students deserve the opportunity to experience a rich arts education. This administration’s focus on the arts began with the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, a curriculum framework for what students should know, understand, and be able to achieve in dance, music, theater and visual arts. In 2007, building on the progress that has been made, the Mayor and Chancellor announced ArtsCount, an initiative designed to provide greater accountability for arts education in our schools. This Annual Arts in Schools Report 2007-2008 shows us where we are and makes clear what we must do to provide quality arts education for every NYC public school student. This information is available both at the school level and for the entire school system.

System-Wide Report: The Annual Arts in Schools Report includes data about arts teachers, arts budgeting, space for the arts, partnerships with arts and cultural organizations, and parent involvement for elementary, middle, and high schools. The first Annual Arts in Schools Report was published in March 2008. The most recent report for the 2007-2008 school year was released in October 2008. These reports help school administrators, parents, and students understand how their schools are progressing towards offering universal arts education to all students

ARTSCOUNT: A GUIDE FOR PRINCIPALS
Setting high standards and holding students accountable for results is the way we ensure that schools help students learn. Starting in 2004, New York City set standards for the arts through the creation of the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, PreK-12. Starting this school year we built on that progress by collecting and reporting on the state of the arts in every school. Our Parent, Teacher, and Student Learning Environment Survey asks about access to and satisfaction with arts education opportunities. Survey results were factored into schools' Progress Report grades. The impact of arts programs on schools also affects their annual Quality Review scores. Additionally, we have issued an Annual Arts in Schools Report for each school and for the enire school system. In the spring, schools’ updated progress towards meeting the NYSED Instructional Requirements in the arts will be reported in the final compliance report and reflected in principals’ annual performance evaluations.

This guide to ArtsCount is designed to support each school in providing a high-quality arts education for all students. In this guide, you'll find practical information about New York State Instructional Requirements for the Arts, a guide to DOE resources and supports, and a description of how schools will now be held accountable for arts education.
