summer arts institute 2008
The 2008 Summer Arts Institute is fully enrolled. We congratulate each accepted student and look forward to working with them this summer. If you missed your opportunity to apply, please contact us in January 2009 for information on next year's program.
The 2008 Summer Arts Intstitute will run from July 7th through August 1st. Students in the film studio will continue for an additional two weeks, ending on August 15. Our cultural partners are American Ballet Theatre, Theatre for a New Audience, Tribeca Film Institute, and Young Audiences New York.
The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, four-week
arts program for New York City public school students entering
grades 8-12, held at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. Students
major in dance, theater, vocal music, instrumental music, visual
art, film or photography. The program is designed for students
at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen
art form. Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for
students to work with master Department of Education arts specialists,
partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. The experienced
staff of teachers and artists guides students in building a portfolio
or audition skills for the next level of their studies: a specialized
high school, college, university or conservatory.
Summer Arts Institute focuses on three areas:
• developing students’ artistic skills and creativity;
• broadening students’ awareness of the arts and;
• helping students recognize and explore career options
in the art and arts-related industries.
This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community
and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong
learning in the arts.
The daily schedule includes morning studio work and afternoon
experiences with professional artists, on-site and off. In the
morning studios, students work at developing and improving their
technical skills and creative expression in their selected art
form. Afternoons are dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional
performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring
potential careers. The Institute culminates with a student visual
art and photography exhibit and live performance for families
and the local community.

Summer Arts Institute 2007
Thank you to the 238 students who participated in the 2007 Summer
Arts Institute as well as their families and our wonderful faculty
and staff. Highlights of the summer included seeing American
Ballet Theatre present Cinderella at the Metropolitan Opera House,
a performance of Gypsy at New York City Center, career development
workshops presented by the Center for Arts Education, the premiere
of our students' short films on environmental issues at Tribeca
Cinemas, and a fantastic culminating performance and art exhibit,
Transformation Through the Arts . We were also very pleased to
participate in a press conference where Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg
and Chancellor Joel I. Klein affirmed their commitment to support
arts education in New York City's public schools.
