Professional Development: Honoring the Diversity of Student Voice



Using media-making as the catalyst for empowering students and acknowledging the diversity of student experience and background, teacher will engage in media activities that explore issues of disability, language, race, gender, and class.


All teachers will receive significant professional learning experiences through active skills and content-based workshops, facilitated professional conversations with peers, and dedicated time for reflection, through rigorous differentiated pedagogy designed to encourage diverse learners.

Please note: These free workshop series are relevant for both new and experienced teachers. This is a three-session series. Participants register once for the series and are expected to attend all three sessions.

Session I: Honoring the Diversity of Student Voice: Jim Henson and Puppetry Onscreen


Date: Thursday, October 19, 2017

Location: Museum of the Moving Image, Queens

Eligibility: Teachers, Grades PreK-12

Time: 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Cost: FREE!


Educators will meet at the Museum of the Moving Image for a peek behind-the-scenes at Jim Henson's groundbreaking work for television and film, along with a special panel presentation.


In hands-on workshops, participants will use a variety of techniques to create their own projects. Each will learn important skills in media, puppetry, and the development of student voice to bring back to their students.



Session II: Honoring the Diversity of Student Voice: Deepening the Experience for Special Populations

The New York City Department of Education Office of Arts and Special Projects is proud to partner with the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and Magic Box Productions to provide exciting professional development offerings for 2017-18 in the Moving Image.


All sessions will address and align with the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Moving Image, New York State Common Core Learning Standards, and Citywide Instructional Expectations.
