Empowering and Inspiring All Students for Lifelong Musicianship


Eligibility: Assigned teachers of music, grades PreK-12

In this series, music teachers deepen their capacity to inspire lifelong musical participation by empowering their students to be musical thinkers. With repertoire at the center, teachers explore ways to engage students in musical decision making, and teachers reflect upon how culturally responsive music pedagogy fosters empowerment and ownership.


Teachers also examine models for coaching and supporting all students in achieving thei musical goals and dreams, in addition to the collective goals of the ensemble.






Short Courses


Building Vocal Technique in the Choral Setting


Location: Carnegie Hall - Resnick Education Wing, 154 West 57th Street, New York, NY

In this two-day short course, participants will actively explore approaches to fostering healthy vocal technique in the choral classroom. As attendees engage in a variety of choral warm ups and vocal exercises, they will consider the key topics of breathing, tone development, vowels, resonance, vocal health, and conducting gestures conducive to healthy vocal development.


This course will also address the following topics and their implications for planning and instruction: vocal anatomy and voice science; aural development; social and cultural influences on vocal behaviors; mindfulness to support vocal development.



Music Technology: The Intersection of Self-Expression, Rigor, and Musical Understanding

As teachers engage in hands-on creative activities, they learn to leverage music technology as a tool for advancing skill development, performance preparation, and independent musical thinking. Participants design technology-supported learning experiences that inspire the curiosity and intrinsic motivation prerequisite to high-level achievement and lifelong musical participation.


Areas of focus include: integrating cloud-based applications to support creativity; recording for reflection, revision, and reinforcement; technology-based models for coaching and documenting progress of student composers and improvisors.
