Salute to Music provides an opportunity for students to receive instrumental music instruction along with other students from their boroughs, culminating in concerts in the spring. Brooklyn and Staten Island have an orchestra and a band at two levels of skill. Bronx and Manhattan have a band program. Queens offers a string orchestra and band ensembles.

The New York Pops will continue to provide semi-private and small group music lesson scholarships after regular rehearsals. These lessons take place at the centers. Information will be available from the Borough-Wide center directors. Lessons are only available to students who participate in the Borough-Wide program and are committed to daily practice that will improve their playing skills.

Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 who play a musical instrument are invited to participate in the Borough-Wide Junior High School Salute to Music Program.   The Borough-Wide Salute to Music Program is open to middle school students who are currently enrolled in  New York City Department of Education schools.  Students who are admitted to the program will play in an instrumental ensemble, receive supplemental instruction on their instrument, and they will benefit from participating in music making experiences with peers within their boroughs. Ensembles in each borough site will work toward and present a culminating concert in the spring.  
 
Students with no prior playing experience who wish to learn to play a band instrument may participate in the Music Masters program.  This program is open to students in grades 4-6 from all five boroughs . It is an extension of the Borough-Wide Salute to Music program.
