Salute to Music provides an opportunity for middle school students to receive choral and instrumental music instruction along with other students from their boroughs, culminating in concerts in the spring. Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island sites have orchestral and concert band ensembles. Bronx and Manhattan sites each have concert band ensembles. A City-wide Salute to Music chorus was established in 2012 and rehearses in Brooklyn. This program is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8, from all five boroughs who are currently enrolled in a New York City Department of Education public school. All ensembles meet on Saturday mornings when school is in session, from 8:45 am to 11:45 am. Each ensemble is staffed by licensed NYCDOE music teachers.
All New York City Department of Education middle school vocal music students are invited to audition for the City-wide Salute to Music Chorus. The Chorus will provide an opportunity for middle school students and their
peers to develop choral singing skills in an engaging, welcoming environment. Students in the City-wide Salute to Music Chorus will take part in a culminating concert at Carnegie Hall held each spring.
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 who play a musical instrument are invited to audition for the Borough-Wide Junior High School Salute to Music Program. Students who are accepted to the program will play in an instrumental ensemble, receive supplemental instruction on their instrument, and they will benefit from participating in music making experiences with peers within their boroughs. Ensembles in each borough site will work toward and present a culminating concert in the spring.
The New York Pops will provide scholarships for semi-private and small group music lessons held after regular rehearsals. These lessons take place at the borough centers. Information is available from the Borough-Wide center directors. Lessons are only available to students who participate in the Borough-Wide program and are committed to daily practice that will improve their playing skills.
Students with no prior playing experience who wish to learn to play a band instrument may participate in the Music Masters program. This program is open to students in grades 4-6 from all five boroughs. It is an extension of the Borough-Wide Salute to Music program.
