Reading: The student reads
at least twenty-five books or book equivalents each year. The quality
and complexity of the materials to be read are illustrated in the
sample reading list. The materials should include traditional and
contemporary literature (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as
magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and on-line materials. Such reading
should represent a diverse collection of material from at least
three different literary forms and from at least five different
writers.
The complete bibliography illustrates that the student met the
goal of reading twenty-five books of the appropriate quality of
literature for the high school standard. This excerpt of the students
annotated bibliography provides evidence that the student read a
variety of books and book equivalents including traditional fiction,
contemporary fiction, and classical and contemporary non-fiction
accounts of World War II. The student regularly reads both The
New York Times and New York Daily News. The student
cited three magazines: The Source, Popular Mechanics,
and Crushfield as well as cookbooks, history books, and
articles on psychology.
Such reading represents a diverse collection of material from poetry,
non-fiction, short stories, and novels.
