c Problem Solving: The student plans and organizes an event or an activity; that is, the student:

develops a plan for the event or activity that:
- includes all the factors and variables that need to be considered;
- shows the order in which things need to be done;
- takes into account the resources available to put the plan into action, including people and time;
implements the plan;
evaluates the success of the event or activity by identifying the parts of the plan that worked best and the parts that could have been improved by better planning and organization;
makes recommendations to others who might consider planning and organizing a similar event or activity.

The student explained her reasons for choosing to work on the lighthouse project and her reasons for planning and organizing a raffle to raise funds to support lighthouse preservation. While preliminary to the development of a plan, her explanation provides evidence of initial planning regarding the factors and variables that needed to be considered in organizing a raffle.

a Information Tools and Techniques: The student gathers information to assist in completing project work; that is, the student

identifies potential sources of information to assist in completing the project;
uses appropriate techniques to collect the information, e.g., considers sampling issues in conducting a survey;
distinguishes relevant from irrelevant information;
shows evidence of research in the completed project.

Having established the goal of raising funds to support lighthouse preservation, the student initiated contact with the Lighthouse Preservation Society to obtain information that would assist her in completing the project.
The student documented her telephone conversations with the President/Founder of the Lighthouse Preservation Society over a two-month period. This communication provided the student with relevant information and resources, enabling her to make informed choices and complete the project.
This documentation also provides part of the evidence of the student’s use of strategies to maintain records of her work activities (b).

The information the student obtained from the Lighthouse Preservation Society provided details on the kinds of preservation work required for specific lighthouses and the amount of money needed to complete the work. The student’s choice of which preservation project to support with the funds raised by the raffle was based on this information.
Refer to for the student’s notes on her decision to devote the funds to the preservation of the Range Lights in Newberryport, Massachusetts. These documents relate directly to this choice including information about the scope of work required and a summary of budget estimates for its completion.
