The students planned the steps they would need to accomplish before the assembly.

The students developed a clear and concise narrative procedure to show other students how to make a Cozy Comfort Cushion. The steps are developed in logical sequence and are clearly stated for the intended audience (other students making the cushions).

b Tools and Techniques for Working With Others: The student shows or explains something clearly enough for someone else to be able to do it.
This “how to” explains how to make a Cozy Comfort Cushion. It provides sufficient detail to allow another person to follow the instructions and achieve a successful outcome.

a Communication Tools and Techniques: The student makes an oral presentation of project plans or findings to an appropriate audience; that is, the student:

organizes the presentation in a logical way appropriate to its purpose;
speaks clearly and presents confidently;
responds to questions from the audience;
evaluates the effectiveness of the presentation.

These materials show the students’ preparation for the presentation to the principal to secure her support for the project. They decided what information they needed to give to the principal, who would talk on each of these points, and the order in which the information would be presented. Then the individual students wrote up notes on what they were going to say and rehearsed them with the class for feedback.

Included here are the criteria that the students established for a successful presentation, “Things we are looking for….” The students cite the parts of the oral presentation (a) performance description and they also noted the importance of making eye contact with the principal. In this type of presentation, i.e., presenting to a single person and requesting permission, eye contact is not only appropriate but important. The students also added, “Stand still,” and “Dress nicely.” Again, these additional criteria are appropriate given the context of the presentation.

The students evaluated the effectiveness of their presentation to the principal as a whole and then evaluated individual performances. The evaluations are clearly based on the criteria the students developed.
