Helene Lighter was my Fifth Grade Teacher. She was as beautiful inside as she was out. She took me from the shy, quiet child I was to the outgoing pre teen I became. I entered P.S. 188 in the Fourth grade, from a private school (grades -3), and inturn was put into a pretty rough and tumble Fourth grade class. Needless to say I had to be transferred into another Fourth grade class mid year. That class was a top class (which I had no business being in at that time) and quickly reverted into my shell. When I got to Fifth Grade Mrs. Lighter made it her business to make me shine! She praised me, took the time to help me actually understand my work (something they never did in the private school) and most importantly made me feel loved. Can you imagine a teacher making you feel love? Being in the school system now I see that from time to time and always remember what it did for me. I only hope that other students get to experience what I did with Mrs. Lighter.
