About Us

Public School 12 was created as a
Gifted and Talented Academy in 1994.
Studentsí acceptance into the program
was based on academic performance
or talent recommendation in grades 3
through 5, while Kindergarten through
2nd. grade students entered the school
on an open enrollment basis.
During its second year, the pupil
composition of P. S, 12 changed. The
school became a zoned school
with the elimination of the Gifted and
Talented Program. The school
received an overflow of students from
Public Schools 191 and 167. In
addition, a Pre kindergarten and a
sixth grade program were added to the
school. Also, the Special Education
population and classes were doubled.

The school's extended day programs are
Project Read and Latchkey which
provide additional help in homework,
literacy, mathematics, technology
and core knowledge curriculum. Our
extracurricular activities include
the followings:
Visual Arts, Band, Chorus, Violin
Instruction and Physical Education.
Through the community support, Malcolm
X Academy provides academic
enrichment, homework help and
recreational activities to over 200
students in its
After School Program.

To strengthen the Parent's support for
the school, numerous workshops on
literacy, educational toys, Core
Knowledge and Comprehensive Educational
Plan are given.
We have Parent Appreciation Day, Annual
Family Day and a functioning
Leadership Team. Parents assist with
clerical duties, lunchroom and class
trips; and the PAhas monthly meetings
with the Principal. We continuously
encourage parent participation.
