THE CROWN SCHOOL - P.S. #161
About Us

PS 161 is located in the Crown Heights
section of Brooklyn. Our K-8 school serves
African-American and Latino students. While many
of our students are American born, we also serve
many immigrant students from the Caribbean.

Our Kindergarten through 5th grade has 6
classes per grade. PS 161 has a middle school
magnet program that serves 180 students in grades
6-8. This program serves academically gifted
students from District 17 and is called the Crown
School for Law and Journalism. Our program has
a strong emphasis on Mathematics and Science.
Additionally, all of our 8th graders prepare for
and take the Specialized High School Entrance
Examinations, and more than 50 percent are
accepted into these schools.

Our Reading and Math scores demonstrate
our success. 84 percent of our students
performed at or above grade level on the CTB
Reading test and 81 percent on the CTB Math test.

In the Crown School for Law and
Journalism program, our students performance was
