PS 161 is located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Our K-8 school serves African-American and Latino students. While many of our students are American born, we also serve many immigrant students from the Caribbean.
Our Kindergarten through 5th grade has 6 classes per grade. PS 161 has a middle school magnet program that serves 180 students in grades 6-8. This program serves academically gifted students from District 17 and is called the Crown School for Law and Journalism. Our program has a strong emphasis on Mathematics and Science. Additionally, all of our 8th graders prepare for and take the Specialized High School Entrance Examinations, and more than 50 percent are accepted into these schools.
Our Reading and Math scores demonstrate our success. 84 percent of our students performed at or above grade level on the CTB Reading test and 81 percent on the CTB Math test.
In the Crown School for Law and Journalism program, our students performance was as follows:
Grade 6 - PAL test 100 percent scored medium or high Grade 7 - PAM test 100 percent scored medium or high Grade 8 - Regents Integrated Math Course 1 100 percent of the students scored not only passing grades but 80 percent and higher. 13 students scored 100 percent (perfect papers).
