Get Ready for November’s Parent-Teacher Conferences
November brings so many exciting things to look forward to—crisp autumn air, pumpkin-spiced everything, Thanksgiving… and New York City Public Schools’ (NYCPS) second round of parent-teacher conferences for the 2024–25 school year!
Now that we are deeper into the school year with the first report card grades looming, you and your child’s teacher(s) both have more experience with your child as a student. This second conference is a valuable opportunity to check in and assess your child’s progress and challenges in more depth. It's also a good time to get tips on how you can help them maintain and improve their grades.
All parent-teacher conferences will be conducted remotely for the 2024–2025 school year. Some schools may, upon request, arrange for an in-person conference. If you prefer to meeting in-person, please contact your child's school.
To help you get the most out of this discussion, here are some tips that will help you work with your child’s teachers and support your child’s academic development:
Tips for November’s Parent-Teacher Conferences
Make sure you know what days and times parent-teacher conferences are happening at your child’s school.
Details and dates vary depending on grade level and each individual school. We recommend reaching out to your school’s administration or parent coordinator to double check! The standard conference dates are listed below:
- Elementary Schools (Grades K–5 and K–8) and Pre-K Centers
- Thursday, November 7—Afternoon and Evening
- Middle Schools (Grades 6–8) and all District 75 Schools
- Thursday, November 14—Afternoon and Evening
- High Schools (Grades 9–12, as well as K–12 and 6–12 Schools)
- Thursday, November 21—Afternoon and Evening
- Friday, November 22—Afternoon
Teachers will work with you to schedule conferences during times that are convenient for both of you to attend. If a teacher is unable to schedule a phone or virtual conference with you during your school's standard conference date, they will work with you to schedule another time to connect.
Review your child's test scores, report card (if you received it already), and attendance through your NYC Schools Account.
It’s important to be up-to-date on your child’s academic progress before you go. This will help prepare you for what you and the teacher may talk about during this second conference.
Make a list of issues you want to discuss with the teacher, such as:
- How has my child progressed over the first two months of the school year?
- Is my child on par academically and socially with their classmates and grade level?
- What could they improve upon and what additional programs or afterschool services may be available to help them?
- Does my child participate in class discussions and group activities?
- What can I do at home to support my child, especially during the upcoming holiday breaks?
Talk to your child in advance.
Speak with your child beforehand about their classroom experience so far in this school year and how they think they are doing in the class. Is there anything they want you to discuss with the teacher?
Get translation and interpretation services if you need them.
All families should have the information they need to best support their child’s learning. Interpretation services are available at parent-teacher conferences if you are not comfortable communicating in English. Please reach out to your school’s parent coordinator for more information.
Make Sure Your Contact Info is Correct in Your NYC Schools Account.
Through your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA), you can track your child’s educational progress at any time from your computer, phone, or tablet. Make sure your NYCSA account is active and up-to-date with your latest contact information, including home/cell/work numbers and current home address.
