Enhanced Community Engagement Supports in the Impartial Hearing Order Implementation Process

What we will talk about: 

The Impartial Hearing Order Implementation Unit (IU) of the Office of the General Counsel through the newly formed Community Support and Engagement Team has created an inclusive, equitable, and family-centric seamless customer service experience. In this orientation, parents and parents’ representatives will learn about our new customer service offerings and updates on how to submit information and documentation for the implementation process. You will receive a walkthrough of the SupportHub - a new user-friendly online platform. You will hear about the work of IU’s Community Engagement Team and the support that they will provide to parents and parents’ representatives during the implementation process. We will also discuss best practices that parents and parent representatives can take to ensure that impartial hearing orders are implemented smoothly.

Understanding Special Education: Resources and Cultural Conversations Across Communities

We are excited to invite you to the Beyond Access Series (BAS), specifically designed for families of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This is a free online event, and all members of your family are welcome to join to learn about special education, resources, and support. 

What we will talk about 

  • Navigating Special Education: Learn about the special education process: starting the process, making a referral, evaluations, the IEP meeting, the IEP, supports/services, and programs. 
  • Understanding Family Rights: Gain insights into the rights and protections for families. 
  • Seeking Help/Support: Receive guidance on how families can access the necessary support and assistance. 
  • Cultural Conversations: Listen to discussions that explore how families navigate the special education system within their cultural contexts. Hear directly from families sharing their personal experiences with special education, offering insights into their challenges, successes, and perspectives from their communities.

Empowering Independence: A Guide to Travel Training for Students with Disabilities

Travel Training empowers students with disabilities to navigate their world with greater independence. Eligible students aged 14 and above with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) can participate in this one-to-one instructional program that teaches essential skills for using public transportation safely and confidently. This program enhances mobility and contributes to long-term success in employment and independent living. Join us to learn how Travel Training integrates into students’ educational programs and supports their journey toward independence. 

What we talk about: 

  • Travel Training Overview: How the program helps students with disabilities develop the skills needed for safe, independent travel on public transportation. 
  • Eligibility and Services: One-to-one instruction, technical assistance, and professional development are available for high school-aged students in District 75 and community high schools. 
  • Collaboration with Partners: How the Office of Travel Training (OTT) works with the NYC Department of Transportation, and NYC Transit to teach key safety and transportation skills. 
  • Access Support & Resources: Learn about accessing support and resources.
